Early tomorrow morning, I’ll be flying to Wisconsin to sign for and pick up a brand new 2017 Honda Ridgeline. Then, I’ll be driving 4+ hours back to Minnesota to deliver the car/truck/SUV-thing to its rightful owner.

So. that means first break-in miles! Woo!

NSX for your time...

I have not. But is a new Ridgeline that rare that they can't source one locally? Seems like an odd vehicle to have to travel for.

I was going to. I was living in Corpus Christi and finally found the M3 I was to purchase. Only problem was it was in Dallas, a 6 hour drive. Or I could fly up then I wouldn’t have to figure out how to get 2 cars home. Well it was the end of the month and I wouldn’t have been able to fly up until the next month. Since the salesman wanted to get the deal done before the end of the month, he was like how about I bring the car to you for free as long as you can take delivery before the end of the month. So wait, not only do I not have to pay for a flight, I get it delivered for free? Yeah let’s do that. So to answer your question, no. Not yet at least. Although with my desires for a second car, it might happen sooner rather than later.

The dealer where I test drove a sample only had 4 on order and IIRC 3 were spoken for already. I live in rural MN so maybe they don’t get the same allocation as other dealers.

The purchasers also wanted a high spec model that was already built and didn’t want to order one.

I flew from Boston to Pittsburgh to get my truck years ago. I was looking for a specific model/options and had been watching for months before one came up. The most nervewracking part is making sure all of the paperwork is arranged properly before you go so there isn’t any room for last minute stunts on the part of the seller, and the registration/insurance is legal.

Will it at least be a fun drive back? (mountains etc?)

I flew up to Scotland from the south west of England to pick up my BRZ, had an almost 500 mile journey back home that night to get used to it, was rather comfortable

Haven’t flown then driven back, but I did just ride down with my dad from Buffalo NY to Baltimore MD to pick up a 91 Miata SE he won on ebay and drove it back. The car had a very loose ball joint, pretty sketchy brakes, and an overfull automatic trans that managed to overheat and puke the excess fluid out on the interstate 80. We attempted to stop and change out the ball joint but the lower strut bushing was rust welded to the thru bolt so we had to stop and put it back together. Oh and the radio was not working so the drive was a bit introspective. All in all it was a decent experience and we had a goodish time and nothing major happened across the 358 miles back.

I am hoping all the paperwork is in order too. I hope they didn’t completely emblazon the vehicle with dealer logos and other shite as well.

Oh and yes southwest Wisconsin is beautiful. Definitely hilly with some twisty bits.

I drove from StL to Kansas City on weekend to look at an MR2 and put down a deposit. Then I went out the following weekend on the Amtrak and the owner picked my up from teh station. Cool experience actually. Great car.

Twice, from STL

In ‘02 I flew to Indianapolis to pick up a bone stock ‘89 Mustang LX (5.0/5spd) w/ 62k on the clock. I ruined the car - dragged out, mid 12 second car. 4 hour drive home.

Back in ‘11 (I think) I flew to Dallas to pick up a ‘03 Miata w/36k for $9750 because all the local cars were shit, and for the same $ had double the mileage. Fun Fact - I sold this car to a dealership in ‘12 or ‘13 for $7700, and the dealership put it on their lot for $12,500. The new owner showed up at my door twice to ask about the car (got my info off the old title) but I never asked what he paid. IU think it was a 10 hour drive home, and it rained for the last 6-7 hours.

i flew from jfk to orlando to pick up a ‘91 XJS.

drove it back over three days, with a stop in chatanooga to see some friends. it was a blast.

before setting off on this, i spoke with the seller, and he ASSURED me the car could absolutely make the trip.

the only fault was driver error. i ran out of gas. :(

I once took a train to buy a motorcycle and ride it home. I felt like a tool sitting on a train with my helmet and gear.

It was a two day drive back. Was also quite enjoyable.

No , took the lazy mans approach. Car carrier from Chicago to NE Ohio for $479 from dealer to my door. Took 4 days(actually 3.5) with other drops the carrier had. With tickets and travel expenses back would have been more to fly on short notice.

Last year I drove to Chicago to look at my S600 and then flew back down a month or so later to drive it back up with a few of my friends. That was a fun road trip. Still the fastest I've ever driven.

No but in the late 1990s I did take a train down to Philly to buy a 1982 BMW 323i and drove it back.

Loved that car. The Euro spec E21 was so, so much better than the US spec.

My first “car.” It was a 98 S-10, bought on ebay, and we took the Amtrak overnight and met them at the train station. I hadn’t been able to understand how to drive manuals before then, and after breakfast it was my turn to drive the 4+ hours home. On the on-ramp, I went 1st gear, 2nd gear, ...5th gear. Oops, never used 3rd or 4th for the first 4 hours with that truck.
